North Sea Night Sailing
Fog and phosphorescence in the North Sea enroute to Norway
Here is the latest blog from Challenger 1 as she starts sailing up the North Sea to Norway. The crew experience fog, phosphorescence, dolphins and downwind spinnaker sailing.
“Unfortunately the fog stayed with us for most of the day, resulting in a small yacht appearing from the gloom, apparently sailing in no wind in the middle of nowhere. We continued the day under motor anticipating the wind which we were hoping would appear. Fortunately, the sun did come out near the end of the day.
Our night shift started quiet with little wind. The sky was clear and stars were out. Our boat wake glowed with phosphorescence from the plankton and otherwise we spent an uneventful night going through the watches. In fact it was so uneventful that port watch decided not to wake us in the morning as they were enjoying the peacefulness of the new day.”
Dolphins and Spinnaker Flying

Dolphins in the North Sea
“At the eventual watch change a dolphin came for a brief swim alongside, although some of the crew believe this was fiction rather than fact. The wind did pick up and again we were under sail. With a slight wind shift it meant we could launch the spinnaker for the first time and sail with the big blue and white kite billowing in the wind.
Meals have been enjoyed by all with everyone participating in the cooking. We’re off watch now to get some well earned rest before returning this evening to see what the weather has in store for the night.”
