At some point in an Atlantic voyage the romance of the journey will inspire a crew member to put pen to paper and create some poetry. Marsh’s poem didn’t come with a title so our working one is…
The Challenge
Bruce, our watch leader wants to set me a task, he said:
“Marsh – I’ve got a question that I’m burning to ask”
He said “I’d like to see a blog that uses some lyrics
That Bev and crew are singing, and that conjures up spirits
Of the dark desert highway, cool wind in your hair,
And other ocean songs in the fresh sea air.
Put some words about your life jacket going pop
And how you fiddled with your dongle that was dry as a mop
Make sure that you reference the lunches on the hop
And watching Kirstie out on the pole for the spinnaker drop”
“Hey Bruce” I responded, “I can give it a try, if you’ll
Buy me some Pitons on the other side.
I love a free beer or two, and some fruity rum punch
We can have them over roti at our beach front lunch”
Bruce was steady at the helm for the four hour watches
Waves were rolling shifty, bash, blurp, gonna need your galoshes
The crew were rolling slowly through each group like a tribe
Doing our best to prevent an accidental gybe
That’s no guff for Ricky cause he shoots up the mast,
Replacing rivets and clips at Olympic fast
Since we’re making steady time now, doing well in our class,
We weren’t put off by oceans waters that’re as calm as glass
The Yankees brought down on deck and tied up with line
With the spinnaker clipped at the ready we were feeling fine
You can see the pride on Ricky’s face as Kirstie climbs out the pole
Chamonix in her mind as she digs deeper in her ocean soul
There is so much in this girl that you’ve gotta like
As she dangles over the seas, in her teeth is the spike
The guy flies free and the letter box is full
Teamwork is the key and it’s pull pull pull
Match the two clews, down the hatch with the sail
Run the tapes to the ends just as quick as you’re able
Interrupted by some dolphins before the bag is packed
It’s been a long lovely day and we’re feeling whacked
Bruce is looking for some dolphins and he’s forgotten the request
But the blog is finished now, and I hope I’ve passed the test.
And as a bonus
On a yacht named Challenger Four
Was a crew that you’d grow to adore
Some tall and some small, Enthusiasts all
But one had a really loud snore
With a run of near half of the miles
You can see their faces light up with smiles
It’s a party tomorrow, with a great deal of sorrow
There’s no booze to light up their dials
